For the next month, I will be sharing a character ball set to tell the story of The Mitten. The animals all fit snugly in the mitten and will really fly when the mitten is flipped inside out.
Week by week I will share another character and will link them all up when finished. So far I have already shared the pattern for the big mitten. You can get started there and fill the mittens week by week with the character balls.
The Mitten by Jan Brett Character Ball Set

- Gauge: Approx 5 dc = 1″
- Size F (3.75 mm) crochet hook
- Brava sport weight acrylic yarn
- Umber Heather
- Black safety eyes
- 3- 6 mm
With Almond yarn, Hdc 9 into magic ring. Join w sl st to beg st.
Ch 2. Work 3-dc decrease over next 3 stitches. Ch 2, sl st in same space as last decrease. Skip 1 st, 6 hdc in next stitch. Sl st in next 2 st. 6 hdc in next st. Sl st in first st of round. Tie off, weave in ends.
With Umber heather, work 6 sc into magic ring. Mark last stitch of round throughout.
Round 1: 2 sc in each sc around (12)
Round 2: *Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc* around. (18)
Round 3: *Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc* around. (24)
Round 4: *Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc* around. (30)
Rounds 5-7: 1 sc in each sc around.
Do not tie off, take a break to work the face:
Center the heart-shaped face over the center of the head. Use the safety eyes to attach the face. Put two safety eyes through the 6-hdc spaces to make eyes and one at the tip of the 3-dc dec to make the nose.
Continue the head:
Round 8: *Sc 3, dec* around. (24)
Round 9: *Sc 2, dec* around (18)
Round 10: *Sc 1, dec* around (12)
Round 11: Dec around. Tie off leaving long tail. Sew opening shut. Weave in ends.
Work around round 3 of head. Refer to picture for placement.
Center ears behind three single crochets behind eyes.
Sl st in first of 3 sc. Work 6 hdc around next sc. Sl st in next sc. Tie off, weave in ends.
