I love crocheted granny squares and am so pleased with how this new circle granny square (finally!) turned out. It was a challenge to keep the circles round and have the squares lay flat. Now that I have it worked out, I’m happy to share this free pattern with you.
I was inspired by the color-mixing children’s books by Herve Tullet. In future posts I will share how I mixed yarn colors to create a baby blanket from this motif.
Circle Granny Square Block
- Size H crochet hook
- Worsted weight yarn in two colors
- Tapestry Needle
Begin with the circle.
Begin with a magic ring. Ch 3 (counts as first dc, now and throughout), 11 dc in ring. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3. (12)
Round 2: Ch 3, dc in same sp. 2 dc in each dc around. (24)
Round 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in next sp. *Dc in next dc, 2 dc in next sp* to end. (36)
Cut yarn. Attach contrasting color for square background.
Round 4: Ch 1. Sc in same sp and next sp. *Hdc in next st, dc in next 2 st, in next stitch work (1 dc, 1 trc, ch 2, 1 trc, 1 dc), dc in next 2 st, hdc in next, sc in next 2 st. Repeat between ** 2 times. Hdc in next st, dc in next 2 st, in next stitch work (1 dc, 1 trc, ch 2, 1 trc, 1 dc), dc in next 2 st, hdc in next. Join w sl st to first sc.
Round 5: Ch 3. Dc in each st around, working 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in each ch-2 corner sp. Join w wl st to top of first ch-3.
Tie off. Weave in ends.
